Preface

Character Growth and their Powers & Abilities are intrinsically linked to one another in Bleach. Through Character Development, you also develop a more powerful Character when it comes to combat potential. In the sense of Bleach, and any other Shounen typically, you can't really divorce one from the other. To reflect this in our Roleplay, all Power attained and all Abilities gained must be through Character Development. How and when that happens, is largely up to the Roleplayer controlling the Character.

In short, almost every aspect of your Character, needs to be earned through Roleplaying. In previous iterations of our Roleplay, you just roleplayed for either points, a promotion or both. You then decided on how to allot this power (or distribute those points) over the various aspects of your character. It didn't matter WHAT you roleplayed to achieve this, only THAT you roleplayed and managed to get a passing mark.

This, will be different. You will now have to roleplay towards the skills and abilities you want your character to possess. This also means that this power is now tied to the character and not to you as a Roleplayer. A new character means starting over from their maximum tier. Likewise, there is no immediate downgrading of skills and abilities or switching up your release abilities or indeed, getting a new release altogether.

This way of Roleplaying is more akin to how an RPG like Fallout or Cyberpunk works. It will require from the Roleplayer a vision for their character and how they would like them to grow. Decisions on where to put skills and abilities will matter much more now since they can't be taken back or, changed after the fact so easily.

1. Gaining Power

Your Character gains power by adding new skills and abilities to their repertoire or by upgrading existing skills and abilities. These skills and abilities must be earnt through Roleplay and achieving sufficient passing grades from your Unit Leader or a Game Master, depending on where the Roleplay took place. All these skills, abilities and upgrades together are called "Chits". So, there are Skill Chits, Ability Chits and Upgrade Chits for both Skills and Abilities. Here are two example Skill Chits:

 Zanjutsu Practitioner
 Requirement: None
Entry Level Skill Chit: receive a C grade on at least 1 Roleplay where your Character acquires this new skill.

This character has received basic training in Zanjutsu and is familiar with all the basic cuts and blocks. They will also be able to parry away incoming straightforward strikes but are unlikely to capatilise on this with a retort or fluid counterattack.

 Zanjutsu Average
 Requirement: Zanjutsu Practitioner
Skill Upgrade Chit: receive a C grade on at least 2 Roleplays in which your Character shows proficiency at their current level.

This character has shown themselves to be an all around average Zanjutsu combattant. They grasp all the basic cuts and blocks very well and knows how to use them effectively. Straightforward attacks coming for them may be fluently parried and if this creates an opening, even a retort or counterattack may prove dangerous to an opponent. They are unlikely to setup complex attack beats.

1.1 Character Tier

Your Character can receive promotions up or demotions down their Unit's hierarchy. This is based on the criteria set by their Unit's culture and Leader(s). Some Units promote or demote based on activity, others on Roleplaying excellence. Most Units will sit somewhere in the middle and expect both some activity from you as well as honing your Roleplaying skills.

Your Character's Rank will determine in which Tier they sit. A Tier is a bracket of Ranks which all share the same minimum Power allotted to them as well as the same maximum Power they can attain. Gaining enough promotions is an important and viable way to increase your Character's minimum Power in one go but, perhaps more importantly; remove skill and ability caps.

You will find that you can only acquire so many new skills and abilities and a finite amount of upgrades per Tier. Likewise, some levels of skills and abilities will be barred unless your Character is of a sufficiently high Tier. If a Skill or Ability needs a minimum Tier, you will find it listed with the Requirement. The Tiers are as follows:

Gotei 13

Las Noches

Wandenreich

  C  20th - 15th Seat Número 20x - 15x Soldat XX - XV
  C+ 14th - 10th Seat Número 15x - 10x Soldat XIV - X
  B 9th - 6th Seat Número 09x - 06x Soldat IX - VI
  B+ 5th Seat - Fukutaichou Fracción Sternritter
A Taichou Espada Jagdanführer & Schutzstaffel

2. Grading

Grading is done by Unit Leaders first and foremost and Game Masters second. Unit Leaders must organise an ongoing  topic/thread in which their members can report their finished RP's and have them graded by the Unit Leader. This topic will also serve as a ledger of all grades handed out and must not be deleted or edited.

    • In their report, players specify for which Chit they seek a grade. Only 1 chit can be graded for each roleplay.
    • Grading is done on a basis from F to A.
    • Grading is done for the roleplay, not the use of the skill or ability by the character.
    • Unit Leaders should grade justly, not complacently and, provide justification.

The graded roleplays:

    • Can be solo or collaborative ("missions"), or spars.
    • Graded roleplays must be on-topic for the desired Chit.

2.1 Passing

A Passing grade is equal or higher than the grade indicated by the sought after Chit. A number of Roleplays must be met with a Passing grade for that Chit to be earnt.

2.2 Failing

A Failing grade is lower than the grade indicated by the sought after Chit.

3. Tier Chit Limits & Minimum Chits

  • Earnable Chits: the maximum number of additional Chits in total which may be earnt by a Character of that tier through Roleplay.
  • Free Chits: the number of Chits a Character possesses based on their Tier alone and can be spent without RP'ing on any Skill, Ability or Innate Power except Reiatsu.

Tier Earnable Chits Free Chits
  C 3 5
  C+ 4 8
  B 6 10
  B+ 7 13
  A 9 20
  A+ 10 22
  S 12 24

3.1 Earnable Chits

These are Chits you earnt through Roleplay. Instead of accruing points, you Roleplay for the specific Chit you want. A Chit is considered earnt if you accumulate enough passing grades for it. You can then add it to your Character. Each Tier may add a limited number of Chits this way.

Say you have the Requirements listed in Immense Strength and want to add it to your Character (and you have no more Free Chits to spend). To Upgrade the Strength Chit, you need to do 1 Roleplay which received a B grade and in which your Character used the relevant power.

 Immense Strength
Requirement: Tier A | Great Strength
Upgrade Chit: Receive a B grade on at least 1 Roleplay where your Character acquires this new power.

Descr.

All Chits will state the Roleplaying requirement to achieve it in terms of number of Roleplays and the minimum Grade to pass. In the Chit System you're not really collecting points, you're collecting grades on Chits you want to add and you can only add so many.

4. Adding & Upgrading Chits

You can add new Chits to a Character in two ways:

    1. By adding them from your pool of Free Chit Points. These are given to you without requiring any Passing grades. You can spend them on your Character as you like (bar on Reiatsu) and, you only need to adhere to the Tier limits on the Chit themselves. The cost of Free Chits is given in the Chit Glossary.
    2. By earning them through Roleplay. Each entry-level Chit will have a requirement and a way to accomplish that Chit through Roleplaying. This would cost Earnable Chit points.

You can also upgrade Chits by:
    1. Upgrading existing Chits or new Chits from your pool of Minimum Chits. These again require no Roleplaying.
    2. Earning the next level Chit through Roleplaying. Each Chit level will say how many passing grades you need to attain that Chit. These will have to be earnt in sequence and one at a time and cost 1 Earnable Chit for each level upgrade.

The cost in Free Chits can be read in the Chit Glossary overview along the top bar:

TYPE | Free Chits

↓     →

1

2

3

4

5

6

Speed Enhanced Nimble Great Immense Bullet Lightning Slow

A B Tier Character has 10 Free Chits and can add 6 Earnable Chits. They could add Enhanced Speed for 1 Free Chit and distribute the other 9 Free Chits elsewhere. With Earnable Chits, they could improve their Enhanced Speed to Nimble and then Great, costing 1 Earnable Chit each.

  1.

4.1 Earning Event Chits or Free Passes

Participating in Events can earn you Event Chits. These special Chits cannot be otherwise earned and will feature unique rules and stipulations. Some will allow you to grow your Character after you've already earnt all earnable Chits, others may even break the Character Tier allowing them otherwise inaccessible skill levels, and so on.

4.2 Downgrading Chits

You cannot take Chits back once invested freely. You can Roleplay a "retcon" in which your Character loses some or all of their Skills and Abilities. These Chits are then removed from your character and you can re-earn them somewhere else. This is helpful if you ran into a Chit Limit and want to tweak or rebuild a character.

5. Building A Character

You can now build your Character's Powers & Abilities using Chits, or use the CCM (Character Chit Manager) to help you. You should use the Chit Lookup Chart to find the Chits you want for your Character. Remember, you get a number of free Minimum Chits to expend right away to build as a start. However, once approved you cannot take your expended Chits away anymore! So think about which direction you want to take your Character in and plan ahead.

5.1 Layout

The Powers & Abilities should be laid out as follows, along with the header "Powers & Abilities". Everything in [brackets] is there for annotation and isn't taken up in the profile.

Powers & Abilities
[0 FC] [0 EC]

[Innate Power Chits]

Reiatsu

Strength [FC/EC]

Speed [FC/EC]

[Skill Chits]

Hohō [FC/EC]

Skill Specific Ability [FC/EC]

Zanjutsu [FC/EC]

Hakuda [FC/EC]

Kidō [FC/EC]

[Faction Ability Chits]

Reiraku [FC/EC]

Cero [FC/EC]

Blut [FC/EC]

You add the level of each Chit in the appropriate place as well, for instance, "Hohō Expert" or "Enhanced Blut Vene". Optionally, you can link each Chit in your profile to the corresponding Chit in your Faction's Chit Glossary and you are also allowed to put the total Chit number in front of each Chit, for instance: Hohō Expert [5FC]

You may add a bookkeeping score of your Free Chits ([FC]), your Earnable Chits ([EC]) and the Grades you have received for each allocated Earnable Chit as well. This gives you a more organised overview of where you are and what you are pursuing. This isn't mandatory but it does help keep track of when you're ready to

5.2 Example Character Powers & Abilities

Here is a complete example of a Shinigami Character with 1 additional Chit earnt. They list their total Free Chits and Earnt Chits at the top, followed by a list of their skills. Behind each skill, they list what they put in for Free Chits and Earnt Chits. At the bottom, they list the grades (linked to the grading) for their first (and in this case only) Earnt Chit for Hakuda Average.

Powers & Abilities

[7FC] [1EC]

Basic Reiatsu
Enhanced Strength [1FC]
Hohō Average [2FC]
Zanjutsu Average [2FC]
Hakuda Average [1FC|1EC]
Reiraku [1FC]

EC1: B- B+

6. Chit Tier Breaking (Advanced)

All Characters of Tier B+ and A can potentially break the Tier Limit. This allows them to upgrade one or more Chits to above their usual Tier Limit. Chit Tier Breaking costs an additional amount of Chits. Characters doing so must already be at their Tier Limit for that Skill or Power. All Characters may Tier Break twice (2x), including with Event Chits.

The rules are as follows;

6.1 Tier B+ Characters

  • Tier B+ Characters can upgrade 1 Skill to Master Level, costing 2 extra Earnt Chits (e.g. 7 in total) OR 1 Innate Power (Strength or Speed) costing 2 extra Earnt Chits (e.g. 7 in total).

6.2 Tier A Characters
  • Tier A Shinigami and Quincy can upgrade 1 Skill to Master Specialist Level, costing 4 extra Chits (e.g. 9 in total).
  • Tier A Arrancar can upgrade 1 Innate Power (Strength, Speed), costing extra 4 Chits (e.g. 9 in total) or Hierro for 6 in total.
  • Tier A Quincy can alternatively raise their Blut Level similarly, costing 4 extra chits (e.g. 9 in total).

Note: some Event Chits may be used to Tier Break. This significantly lessens the cost of doing so (e.g. just the Event Chit itself + the Chits used to get to the Skill/Power limit). Using Event Chits can't be used to Tier Break more than twice in total.

7. Releases

Releases work parallel to Powers & Abilities with their own Chits. You receive Free Chits based on your Tier and you can earn additional Chits through Roleplay. You can only dedicate a Roleplay for grading purposes to either a Powers & Abilities Chit OR a Release Chit. Each Faction's Releases are explained in separate threads.
